Developing a body of highly stylized flattened paintings since the 1990s, Brian Calvin’s works were dominated by landscapes and portraits steeped in his Californian roots with the figures’ temporal pauses as a defining characteristic. The artist’s recent work moved from revealing his subjects’ whole faces and instead highlights individual features, suggesting an interior world beyond the space of the canvas.
